Nymph Damselflies and Argos. Original Character out of the mind of a G.DESIGNER

Graphic design is a very exciting career that mixes art and creativity. It also makes a difference in our world even though many can’t seem to see it. It easily does this by communicating social ideas of people, attracting a client to a business or motivating people to do something. Not only that, but we design so people can make a connection to other people. In this article I’m going to explain how we use this connection and make it.

What is Graphic design?

Graphic design is the successful combination of creativity that a person has and the formal training in the fine arts with the audience-centered approach of marketing to create effective visual communication. But unlike the area of fine arts, a person working in this field must be in the service of the client needs. There are only a few occasions where a designer can decline the work from a client. And, in doing this the person is in the process of making a product or service that’s appealing to the consumers.

Graphic design is also a good use of mental strategy because a person would have to solve visual problems using text and/or graphic elements. For our aim is to create something visually pleasing to the eyes of the target audience while at the same time getting their attention.

What are some of the responsibilities?

Those in the type of field have many responsibilities. One being that a designer must have an extensive knowledge in print, special processes, quality control, the types of digital files and how to troubleshoot either the work or machinery. It also encompasses and product that’s on paper and on electronics. In any job that a person would take in the field would be asked to either do paper and/or work that goes onto the web. Do not worry; most will narrow down the responsibilities of what they want a job seeker to do in the job description or while working in the work place. But that still doesn’t mean a person would still not have plenty to do that’s geared to the job.

A major responsibility that a designer has is to the client and to the audience (public). That is because a designer has to juggle what the client wants, what good for the product while trying to design something that attracts the attention of the public. There is also an additional responsibility to both of them also. That is to make sure you do not offend both parties while trying to design the item. For, if the people hate it, a certain designer will have a lot less work to design in the future. A reason for that today is because of the easily offended people that is in our society and has become overly sensitive to many things that are not trying to offend in the slightest. You, and other people, will have to remember that graphic design is still an art form and because of that people will have their own perception of the work due to their own, or your own, experiences in life.

That doesn’t mean to stress over offending people, but to try to minimize it as much as you can. Because people will always find something that will either offend them or someone else they know. In the end, a person (you) should not stress and tire themselves over the responsibilities and duties of graphic design. And if they do, the person (potentially you) can constantly mess up the work(s) and would have to redo it over and over again until it is right. Thus causing more stress on the person then originally before.

How does Graphic Design affect us today?

Graphic design is a vast field that expresses itself in many ways. Such a vast thing that it that people does not realize how much it affects us today or in the past. It is because everyone has grown up surrounded by the many items that are covered in some sort of design without thinking who or where its design from. Nor are we thinking about how we are influenced by those designs. It is to the point that it has become such an integrated part of our lives that people have ignored the designs to a point. I say to a point because people are still being influenced by graphic design when they buy products from the store, get information from pamphlets or like a certain advertisement that is seen on the television.

Today, graphic design is one of the few fields that our society cannot function without. It is because of the many areas that theses designers have a function and have a hold in. Below are areas that graphic designers work in that gives them that hold:

Brand imaging

It is an official image, signature and/or identity of a company that the world can easily identify their product at a glance. It may not seem important, but if a person actually think about it; we are surrounded by the images that can be identify at a glance. A good example of this is the golden arches that belong to McDonalds. Everyone can see the giant ‘M’ from a distant and know that are about pass a McDonalds.

Their decision to go, or not go to, to that restaurant is partly influenced by the giant logo in the sky because you know that the place is there. This is why branding an image is key because of the ability to identify the company and/or product. Can you image no being able to find your favorite food or image you typically buy because the logo changed or been taken off.

Not being able to find your favorite soda, the candy you like the most or being able to find the restaurant you like since their sign has been taken down. What chaos it would be if people could not find the items they regularly get from a store or a website.

Besides identifying a company with a logo, or something along the line, brand imaging is also about getting the company reputation up. Either by using social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) or by word of mouth of the people. You would be surprised how word of mouth can easily spread the news about a company.

Copywriter/Sales Copy

First off I would like to say to you, and to also to clear up any confusion; copywriting is not like ‘copyright.’ Copyright is the protection of inventions against thief from other people. While copywriting is the writing of copies for the purpose of selling or marketing a product, business or idea. It is also not all about the words. Images play an important role to by catching the eye of the consumer. If these images are not tied to the layout of the article, or whatever it’s attached to; the chances are the words are read by someone is slim to none.

A good example of this is the advertisements that are mailed to your home. Those mailed advertisements have a nice amount of images, not too much or too little informational text, and it catches your eye even for a second. It did its job even if you throw it away. For you had read it and made that decision to throw it away because what they were trying sale to you is something you did not want or have no money for.

Television Commercials

Yes, we also play a part in this to. We have a hand in creating the funny, the sad, the informational ads and many more. I’m sure there is a commercial from the past to the present that you either love or just cannot forget. Commercials can even be trends on the Internet and in life because of how much people love the commercials. That is because on some level our work has struck a chord in them and influenced their behavior in some way. This is why many of the commercials today and those from the past are still popular today even though they have not been seen on TV for ages.

A prime example of a popular commercial is [Doritos ‘Sling Baby’ 2012 Super Bowl Ad]. It where the grandmother pulls the baby in the sling and sends him flying to grab the Doritos bag from the older brother. This is the successful work of graphic designers, producers, actors and many more people in the world of television. You will have to remember graphic designers do not work alone in some areas in the field. That’s why there is usually a team of people doing things.

Banners/Posters/Billboards

Everyone sees these everywhere. When you’re driving down the road, when standing at a bus stop, on buildings and many other places. Sadly there is also a problem with this as well. Most consumers would only look at this kind of ad for only for a few seconds in their day. This is where graphic designers come in, because they would have to make an immediate connection for the consumer to actually look at the ad for much longer or it would be a wasted effort on everyone’s part.

Product Packaging

This one thing by designers that everyone can easily hold and see. The packaging for products is everywhere. From the labels on your favorite drink to the wrapping paper used for presents.

These packages are what we easily identify with a brand before we even look at the text on it or what it even is. That’s the main reason why each packaging for brands is so different. Even with one brand, it can have different labels for each product it has. A good example of this is the ‘Miracle Whip’ brand. They have three different labels and colors for the jars. The regular blue is for the ‘Miracle Whip: Original,’ then there is the light blue color the ‘Miracle Whip: Light,’ and there is the red color label for the ‘Miracle Whip: Fat Free’. Those three are only examples of the different kinds of packaging the company has for it products. Even with the change of labeling, there will be certain characteristics that will remain that people will easily identify them.

Business Cards/Menus/Brochures

For almost any business they need the most important items that we design to get their company out there in the world. All business can identify themselves with business cards and brochures. While restaurants need the menus to show what products they are selling to them. If one of these items don’t even remotely look right to the public, or can’t read it, it can drive away customers instead of drawing them in. Thus losing profits for the company or restaurant.

That why the final point of this is to a fantastic arrangement of high quality images and text to properly advertise their services.

Graphic Design can be seen where today?

Graphic design can be seen in many places all around. Here are some things of what they can be seen as:

  • Credit cards

What are the careers that fall under graphic design?

The careers may not be many in the graphic design field but each one plays an important part of a company. For each one can easily cover a broad range of things to do.

Advertising

I think this explains itself by name alone.

Web Design

Albeit a new to the graphic world, it plays an important role in the world. You don’t see a company today without a website of some sort or kind. It also plays an important role of establishing a company to. Because a website can get the company logo out, the brand, advertising, product, marketing and the ease of public relations to the people.

Also on an important note for web designing to know is that there are two kinds of people that work on websites. These people are Web Designers (Graphic Designers) and Programmers. What makes them different is that one works the front end of the website and the other works the back end of one. Programmers are the back end workers of a websites. Graphic Designers are the Front-end workers of a site. That means we work with minimal amount of code while we design and Programmers work heavily in code and don’t really design at all.

We make it pretty with a good amount of working feature while Programmers make the heavy coded functions work.

Book Design

This one is vast because a person in the career can easily go from designing covers to the doing very detailed layouts.

Freelance

Just taking up work or projects from different people and companies. Work here can range from advertising to web designing.

What are the tools used for the field?

There are many tools that are available for Graphic Designers. The main tools that we use are Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash, and Microsoft Office software. The tools that fall under this field depend on which career path you have chosen in life.

What are the types of designs that Graphic Designers deal with?

The types of designs can be broken down into two types: type-based design and image based design.

Typed-based design is basically relying on the word to convey a message. This part of design is important because it is giving the information that needs to be known by the consumer. Its not like the image-based design is not important. Designed images help attract the attention and to convey the message. Both are im portant to like both the consumer and business.

Graphic Design combines all of these creative and technical skills. It also means working on the cutting edge of technology and creativity. When you do, or if you do, ire a designer to the work you cannot do. For you will be hiring a person that is a professional with the skills to get you connected to the audience and reach any business goal that you set. And remember to have fun with the field.

Now the thing to ask is: ARE you a Graphic Designer?
